1 - YOU JUST CAN'T HAVE ENOUGH TRAINING. IT'S NOT LIKE LEARNING TO DO A FILLING WHERE ONCE YOU HAVE IT YOU GOT IT. IMPLANTOLOGY IS STILL EVOLVING AND WILL FOR MANY YEARS. WILL THE SCIENCE OF IMPLANT MATERIALS AND SURFACE TREATMENTS EVER PLATEAU? I SEE NO END IN SIGHT FOR BONE GRAFTING TECHNOLOGY UNTIL THE HOLY GRAIL OF GRAFTING IS ACHIEVED....SOMEDAY..... MAYBE.

SO EVEN THOUGH DENTAL SCHOOLS ARE BEGINNING TO INCLUDE IMPLANTOLOGY, THE MAJORITY OF OUR TRAINING WILL BE CONTINUING ED COURSES. TAKE AS MANY AS YOU CAN AND GRAFTING COURSES ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS IMPLANT COURSES. 70% OF MY CONSULTATIONS ARE CASES THAT NEED GRAFTING, OR EXTRACTIONS AND GRAFTING FIRST BEFORE THE IMPLANTS CAN BE TREATMENT PLANNED. FROZEN CADAVER HEAD COURSES ARE THE BEST. YOU NEED TO GET IN THERE AND DIG AROUND WHEN IT DOESN'T COUNT. AND CHECK OUT AS MANY HEADS AS YOU CAN TO GET A FEEL FOR THE DIFFERENT ANATOMIES. IF YOU ARE REALLY SERIOUS, GO TO AS MANY A.A.O.I. AND I.C.O.I. EVENTS AS YOU CAN.

2 - YOUR BEST ASSET IS YOUR PATIENT BASE. THEY ALREADY TRUST YOU AND LIKE YOU OR THEY WOULDN'T BE THERE. MOST OF YOUR PATIENTS WANT YOU TO DO THE MOLAR ENDO OR THE PERIO SURGERY. THEY DON'T WANT TO GO TO A SPECIALIST THEY DON'T KNOW AND SPEND BIGGER MONEY. THEY WANT YOU TO PERFORM THE SINUS LIFT AND PLACE THE IMPLANTS IN THE SURROUNDINGS THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH, AMONG THE PEOPLE THEY KNOW.

EDUCATING YOUR PATIENTS ABOUT YOUR NEW TALENT LEVEL IS THE KEY HERE. PAMPHLETS, INFORMATIONAL SHEETS, VIDEOS IN THE RECEIPTION ROOM. VIDEOS, IMPLANT MODELS AND REPLICAS OF YOUR OWN IMPLANT DENTURE CASES IN ALL OPS. NEWSLETTERS ARE NICE FOR EXPLAINING WHAT YOU LEARNED DURING YOUR CONTINUING ED COURSES. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST OF THEM KNOW YOU ARE REALLY ON THE GOLF COURSE ALL DAY.....SO MAYBE THAT'S JUST A WASH.

OVER TIME, PEOPLE WILL ASK YOU FOR IMPLANT DENTISTRY WITHOUT ANY "SELLING" ON YOUR PART. THAT'S WHEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ARRIVED.

3 - ADVERTISING IS A STICKY-WICKET. MY UNDERGRAD BUSINESS COURSES TAUGHT US THAT SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES SPEND 10% OF THEIR BUDGET ON ADVERTISING. LARGER GROUP IMPLANT PRACTICES SEEM TO BE VERY SUCCESSFUL WITH THAT FORMULA, ADVERTISING IN ALL PRINT OUTLETS, RADIO, TV, INTERNET AND FREE NIGHT SEMINARS FOR PROSPECTIVE PATIENTS. GREAT STUFF IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AND ENERGY TO PULL IT OFF.

FOR THE REST OF US SOLO G.P.'S ON A MODEST BUDGET, 10% CAN BE HARD . I'VE DONE IT IN THE PAST BUT THE MORE I DO IT, THE LESS I LIKE IT. SOMETIMES I'D FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING FOR THE ADVERTISER INSTEAD OF MYSELF. WE ALREADY WORK 5 MONTHS FOR THE IRS. ADD 1 MONTH FOR THE ADVERTISER, 5 MONTHS FOR THE FAMILY AND I'M LEFT WITH ......1 MONTH FOR MYSELF!!......HEY!... WHERE DID EVERYTHING GO? BUT I DIGRESS....

STARTING OUT BUILDING YOUR IMPLANT PRACTICE I'D RECOMMEND USING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY PAPERS FIRST. "PENNYSAVER" "THE BEA" WHATEVER THEY ARE IN YOUR AREA. GET YOURSELF A LOGO AND RUN YOUR AD OVER THE LONG HAUL, THEREBY CREATING A BRAND PRESENCE IN YOUR AREA. THIS IS THE BEST AD MONEY SPENT AS THE PATIENTS ARE LOCAL AND WILL STAY WITH YOU AFTER THE IMPLANTS ARE DONE. ADVERTISING IN MAJOR CITY PAPERS HAS LONGER REACH BUT COSTS A LOT MORE AND FEWER OF THESE LONG DISTANCE PATIENTS WILL STAY AFTER THE IMPLANTS. SAME FOR RADIO AND TV, BUT DOUBLE THE MONEY.

DON'T FORGET THE INTERNET. YOU CAN GO CRAZY HERE AS WELL.... SPENDING A LOT OF TIME & MONEY ON S.E.O. AND P.P.C. I'M JUST ASSUMING YOU ALREADY HAVE A WEBSITE. I THINK IT'S A BETTER RETURN THAN PRINT AND RADIO, BUT I'M JUST GUESSING FROM MY EXPERIENCE. AT LEAST YOU CAN ZERO IN ON YOUR LOCATION WITH GOOGLE ADS FOR INSTANCE. I DIDN'T EVEN MENTION THE PHONEBOOK. HMMM..
